The Lyme 1 Hotel Guide: Things to do in Lyme Regis
If one thing’s for certain, it’s that you’ll never run out of things to do in Lyme Regis! From the sea to the sites or fossils to family fun, there is plenty to keep everyone entertained. Read on for our definitive guide of just some of the things to do.
Just moments from Lyme 1 Hotel, we are in the perfect position for both the sheltered sandy beach, perfect for kids and water sports, and the pebbly beach of Monmouth, a fossil hunting haven and home to the most incredible Ammonite Graveyard you’ll ever see.
Here at low tide, you can paddle in rock pools or stroll along the beach and try your hand at Fossil hunting. Bring a hammer to crack open the large egg-shaped rocks that could have hidden treasure inside or sit down and comb between the pebbles to find ammonites simply strewn on the floor. Better still, book yourself one of the many fossil hunting tours and find out all the secrets of the best places to look. You are pretty much guaranteed to come home with pockets full of Fools Gold, Ammonites, Belemnites and even dinosaur bones, if luck is on your side!
If you want to get on the water, Lyme Bay is generally well sheltered. Learn paddle boarding (Boylos) or hire a Kayak (Lyme Kayak Hire 01297 443373). If you fancy your hand at deep sea or Mackerel fishing, try Lyme bay boat trips or you can really get your heart going and enjoy the incredible scenery from a high speed rib ride.
For those wishing to soak up the views with a gentler form of exercise there are the most wonderful beach yoga classes and a friendly early morning sea swimming community who are always welcoming to new people wanting to join in. Further from the beach, Lyme Regis Golf Club has the most incredible views looking over the cliffs towards Charmouth and back over Lyme.
Back in town, the Lyme Regis Museum gives a fascinating insight to the history of the area and of course our most famous fossil collector, Mary Anning. Whist the Dinosaurland Fossil Museum won’t disappoint either with a permanent collection of over 16,000 specimens from Lyme Regis and the rest of the world.
Be sure to stroll along Cart Road by the seafront and enjoy the pretty multicoloured beach huts, then past the Lifeboat station and along The Cobb. This semi-circular breakwater was built to protect the harbour as early as 1272 in the reign of Edward the First. It saw Lyme Regis grow to become a shipbuilding centre and port larger than the port of Liverpool by 1780. At the end of The Cobb there are stunning views where you can look back and take in the beautiful vista of Lyme Regis and along the coast.
Another area not to be missed is the atmospheric cobbled yard of the Town Mill where you’ll find a working watermill as well as an art gallery, artisan shops, a microbrewery and café and restaurant.
If you’d like a walk to soak up the scenery, you can enjoy a lovely 5-mile circular route along the South West Coast Path. Follow the signposts up to the golf course, through woodlands, then along the cliff and down to the gorgeous seaside town of Charmouth, where you can stop for refreshments or explore the Heritage centre. Finally, a beautiful walk back to Lyme Regis along the beach (be sure to time your walk with low tide and arrive back in Lyme with at least a couple of hours to spare before high tide).
So much to do….and of course all of this is in between exploring the lovely cafes and restaurants Lyme has to offer and hiring a deck chair and finding time to relax on the beach!
